We recently took on a new trainee bicycle mechanic at one of our retail stores, Abi. This is the inside story of her career development as-it-happens at Good Cycles.

Bikes impact our lives positively in so many ways. They’re great for our health, they reduce congestion on our roads, they’re an affordable mode of transport and they have minimal impact on the environment. They’re also the foundation of our mission to help young people facing barriers to work.

When you support Good Cycles you are helping us to turn disadvantage on its head. Good Cycles employs people who are under-represented in the labour force. The employment pathways that might work for the ‘average’ person often fail to unlock other employees’ potential.

Good Cycles’ supported employees have been using photos to express themselves and reflect on their day to day experiences of work. Using digital platforms was already part of the job, but using the smartphone for creative expression to explore professional identity was something new. Dylan began his journey like many of Good Cycles’ social program participants, entering the Pedal Empowerment Program (PEP) after a lengthy period of unemployment.

Team building days are always great fun at Good Cycles and our most recent day out was no exception. In true GC spirit, we got on our bikes and set off for a group ride adventure down to the Bellarine Peninsula.

This is Nathan. He’s been a trainee with Good Cycles for two months now, so no doubt you’ve seen him around. Maybe in the workshop, probably at the Hub or maybe out on the Melbourne streets racking up the ks on his bike.

We work hard to forge strong industry connections here at Good Cycles and so we often connect with potential program participants through introductions from our broad network. That’s how we met Nathan.
